Guidance from the DfE : How to use the PE and sport premium:
Schools must use the funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE and sport they offer.
This means that schools should use the premium to:
- develop or add to the PE and sport activities that the school already offers
- make improvements now that will benefit pupils joining the school in future years
For example, the school can use its funding to:
- hire qualified sports coaches to work with teachers
- provide existing staff with training or resources to help them teach PE and sport more effectively
- introduce new sports or activities and encourage more pupils to take up sport
- support and involve the least active children by running or extending school sports clubs, holiday clubs and Change4Life clubs
- run sport competitions
- increase pupils’ participation in the School Games
- run sports activities with other schools
The school should not use its funding to:
- employ coaches or specialist teachers to cover planning preparation and assessment (PPA) arrangements - these should come out of the school's core staffing budgets
- teach the minimum requirements of the national curriculum - including those specified for swimming
Schools are required to publish the following details on the school website:
- how much funding has been received
- a full breakdown of how this funding has or will be spent
- the effect of the premium on pupils’ PE and sport participation and attainment
- how the school will make sure these improvements are sustainable
At Surrey Street Primary School, we are passionate about providing quality sport and PE. We believe that an innovative and varied PE curriculum and extra-curricular opportunities have a positive influence on the concentration, attitude and academic achievement of all children.
To ensure the health and well-being of all of our pupils, a range of sporting activities is provided to maximise and encourage participation regardless of ability and gender.

The formula is £8000 per school plus an extra £5 per pupil.

The school has active netball and football teams. Children from the school have also participated in dance and athletics (33 pupils) competitions.
Through the half-termly inter-class competitions all children are now regularly involved in competitive sport. These competitions have given a real purpose to the PE lessons.
Planning, building up to and covering these competitions, is now in place, meaning that this can be built on in future years. It is hoped that the evident enjoyment gained through such competitions will encourage more children to participate in extra-curricular sports clubs.
The raised profile of school teams has resulted in raised outcomes. The netball team in now in the premier league and the football team is in division 1. It is hoped that this evident success will encourage even more children to participate in inter-school competitions.

Children taught how to skip or taught additional skipping skills, which can be used in the playground.Children learn how practice and perseverance enable skills to be developed – this understanding applies to all sports and learning in other curriculum areas.

Appoint a PE apprentice to support in PE lessons and to assist in running further sports clubs.
Active Luton SLA
Children will benefit from higher quality PE lessons.
Children will have greater access to sports clubs.
Children will benefit from a greater number of organised activities at lunchtimes.
Through effective use of the PE apprentice and teacher workshops led by Active Luton, children will be gaining access to higher quality PE demonstrations and skills during their PE lessons. Staff will also be developing their skills which they can use when teaching PE in future years.
The PE apprentice is also supported in running additional lunchtime sports clubs.
Active Luton train play leaders which promotes greater involvement in active pursuits at lunchtimes.
