Special Educational Needs
The SENCo, Mrs Jackson, is responsible for drawing up timetables and for monitoring IEPs/ILPs. If you have any questions or queries regarding these sessions then please do not hesitate to call the office and make an appointment. You may also make an appointment if you wish to discuss your child's special educational needs or want to discuss Educational Professional support. The SEN and EAL policy can be found below.
Flamingo Bay is a specialist intervention that has been set up specifically to support students with complex needs (particularly learning/ASD/communication difficulties). It is a highly structured nurturing environment where children benefit from individual workstations, TEACCH style individualised approaches and visual timetables. It has an exceptionally high ratio of adults to children and is structured around managing and catering for a small number of students with complex additional needs. The children work on the following:
- communication through play activities
- group turn taking activities
- activities to develop concentration/attention
- focus tasks to build independence
- IEP tasks
- expressive and receptive language tasks
- following instructions tasks
- social skills
Journey Class and Welcome Class
Journey Class (key stage 1) and Welcome Class (key stage 2) are specialist wave 3 interventions that have been set up specifically to support students who are at the early stages of English acquisition.
The program of study is established to provide pupils with the vocabulary and grammatical structures needed for both school performance and everyday living.
Together with the support of two teaching assistants the teacher in each class develops language acquisition and cognitive academic language skills through the use of sound instructional techniques. The classes provide the children who are new to English the opportunity to grasp the academic, social, and cultural aspects of the English language through the teaching of reading, writing, spelling, and listening along with developing the mathematical vocabulary necessary to access the learning in the classroom.
