Numeracy

Explain to your child that we are going to be learning about weight. What do we use to measure weight? Ask your child to think about when they are baking cakes. What do they use to measure the flour or sugar etc.(Weighing scales). Show children kitchen weighing scales if you have them or bathroom scales. Then explain if the we have two objects and we want to find out which is the heaviest we can use balance scales. Show your child a picture of balance scales and have a go at making them. When there is nothing inside the scales they balance (show the children the balance scales balanced). If you put something heavy in on one side it will go down on one side because it is heavy/heavier. If you put two objects on the balance scales the side that goes up or is the highest means that this object is light/lighter. Can your child use the words heavy, light, lighter, heavier.
